Comics

I got real heavy into the comic book scene 5 years ago approximately and just followed it from that point on.  Anything that was currently running I didn’t hop into because I wanted to read everything from issue #1.  I’ve now reached a point where I feel I owe it to myself to read some of the “modern classics” thanks to the joys of Graphic Novels I don’t have to dig through old long boxes at comic shops looking for early issues.  Here are the first 4 I’ve decided to get into and a little info on them.

100 Bullets – I’ve picked up Volumes 1-4 of this series so far and it is stunning, the premise is people are given a gun and 100 bullets all untraceable. Along with that they’re given a brief case with information on someone who has done them wrong in their life. From there it is up to the recipient to decide what to do with what they’ve just been given. The art took me a bit to get used to but the story telling is on par with some of the best I’ve ever read.

Y : The Last Man – I’ve gotten the first three volumes of this series and so far don’t have a single complaint.  All of a sudden all men die on earth except for one, and his pet monkey.  You’re left with a washed up magician and his attempts to figure out what the hell is going on. All hell breaks loose after that and what unfolds is one of the more compelling modern comics out there.  I can see qualities in this story that even non comic readers could appreciate its a real gem.

Fables – I’ve read the first three Volumes of this one so far.  Storybook land hits New York City, follow all the fairy tales are they try to meld with society and not blow their cover.  I was initially skeptical on this one, but the first 2 volumes were awesome.  I’m half way into volume 3 and I’m not too sure on it but from what I’ve heard as a whole this story is awesome. I need a little more time with it before I can have an honest opinion on it.

One Hit Kills

Now on a totally different note, this was brought to my attention today. Its called The Wasp Injection System, a knife that can instantly kill someone when you stab them. How it works is once you’ve plunged the knife into something you press a small trigger on the handle and a blast of pressurized gas is released instantly expanding to a frozen ball of gas the size of a basketball.  This ball freezes all organs and tissue it touches causing massive damage.  Apparently the knife is meant for divers and hunters to project themselves from animals that may attack them since a normal knife wont stop a charging bear or shark.

Here is the issue, these things are finding their way onto the streets. Who would’ve thought a weapon you can buy online for $500 would find its way onto the streets and people would start using them on each other?!  If weapon violence wasnt already issue now they have weapons that can turn an angry bar fight and some stitches into homicide.  It seems as though this knife needs some additional regulartory action for its sales, its not just a knife.

On the other end of things, Danny and I were talking, how long till we see a movie where some poor schmuck gets one of these dunked into his head?  Guess time will tell the true extent of how this weapon effects out culture, until then lets watch a video of it being used on some helpless watermelons.
