Lewis Black is a comedian that you should have heard of. You may not be aware of the fact that he has books out. As a huge Lewis Black fan, I was overjoyed when I randomly found out that he had a second book out. Even more to my pleasure was the fact that it was on religion. I already was able to tell that this was going to be fun! Yes, I know, you don’t need a comedian to make religion funny.
What is it about?
This is pretty much Lewis Black’s take on various religions. Going through each and pointing out faults and the stupidity that surrounds them. This isn’t to say that he can’t be serious at times, because there are some segments that are. He will also tie in faith into such things as airports. Now who can’t see the humor and truth in that? You will also be able to find out more about Lewis himself. It also isn’t just about him criticizing because he does go into what he believes in. So it isn’t just a book that can be interpreted as one long mindless rant.
Is it good?
I enjoyed this book for the most part. I am a big fan of Lewis Black and his humor. I also have respect for him not holding anything back. He can carry over his humor amazingly well with how he writes. I read this while on the commute to work, and no matter how hard I tried, I still found myself laughing out loud. Reading his views on religion never seemed to get boring. He also always made his points clear as day by going into detail of what he wants to pick apart.
The book does have some problems though. His first book also had this problem. The book could have done without the script for a play at the end. To me, it just didn’t feel like it really worked on paper. Another problem is that with being so familiar with Lewis Black, some parts of the book were recycled from routines.
So should you read this book? Well, this depends on the type of person you are. If you are high on religion and take it serious, more than you probably should, chances are that you will not like the book. If you can laugh at religion and not take things personally, you will like the book. If you can laugh at other religions, but are angered when it comes time for your own to be on the chopping block, then you are a hypocrite. If you are looking for something entertaining or a book that is a quick read, then you may like this book. If you are looking for a book that is deep and goes further into something than a simple read, this may not be for you.
