Get Smart

Get Smart is a TV show that started in 1965 and was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The show lasted for 5 seasons with 138 episodes total. From there a movie was released in theaters in 1980 and a TV movie in 1989. It was resurrected once again by FOX for a 7 episode run in 1995. Over a decade later it has returned with the 2008 movie and a new cast. The 2008 movie also had a spin off film that went straight to DVD. Recently Get Smart Season 1 had a retail release (though lacking the bonus features disc that the Time Life set has). Here is my impression on the 1965 series.

Get Smart focuses on Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) who works for CONTROL, a secret U.S. government spy agency, under the name Agent 86. He is a clumsy agent who usually has his partner, Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), and the Chief (Edward Platt) watching out for him. CONTROL is often trying to stop the evil organization known as KAOS.

This series is simply great. It keeps viewers entertained and interested. It also has a great amount of running jokes that are expected, yet funny every time. The character Maxwell Smart is also highly entertaining and well-rounded. Although clumsy most of the time, he does show that he can get the job done in the end. The characters also balance each other out. Maxwell Smart always has Agent 99 to keep him in line. The chemistry between the characters keeps the show fun and fresh.

I highly recommend that you watch this show if you have not done so already. It is a very entertaining watch and easily one of my favorite TV shows. It is definitely something worth adding to your collection.

If you are interested in buying the series, you can order the entire 1965 collection on TIME LIFE. Would you believe that there was a coupon code for the set? If you don’t feel like dishing out for the whole set, you can purchase just Season 1. If you don’t care about bonus features, you can buy the 4 disc retail version. The video quality is superb for these sets and nothing appears to be wrong with the audio either.
