Battlemouth

I have been awaiting the release of Prototype since watching the madness projected high above my head at the J.K. Javitz Center this past February. Now that it is out….I have to say that I am slightly let down. To start off I want to say that I think everyone needs to check this game out…just rent it….before you buy it.

As opposed to my usual long winded ramblings and play by plays…I will tell you what I am doing in the game….right now, and I think that will paint a fairly good picture of what you can expect.

I just loaded my save and am now kicking it on top of a random building.

After some roof top jumping and gliding around (I do this a lot so to save space we will call it RTJGA) I just stole a tank (an ability you must unlock by “absorbing” a tank driver earlier in the game) and blew up a Military Base.

I drove around in the tank shooting things…buses and people mostly…according to the “operational report” (pops up every once in a while to tell you how many innocents, military, or infected you have killed recently) I killed 105 Military, 214 Innocents, and 0 Infected….recently….plus I “absorbed” a bunch of people in between…good times…

Smashed a couple tanks in Central park with my big arms….I was just trying to get to the next mini game thing…they started it.

Mini game/ event was called- “Disembowlment” (according to google spellcheck thats a typo…shame shame Activision). I was given a certain of my powers (in this case the knife/ wolverine claw things) and told to kill as many bad guys as I could in 30 seconds. I killed 33, a gold medal. Earned 13000 EP to spend on upgrades. Thinking about upgrading my RTJGA abilities…we’ll see.
Most of the mini-games go something like this…better medal equals more EP (xp)…this is the first time I have done better than bronze…but it was a pretty easy one too. The others involve RTJGA stuff and I get distracted to easily.

Found another “Disembowlment” mission close by….barely got a bronze on this one…inconsistent difficulty…annoying.

“Absorbed” a small old lady (I need health what?)…took on the costume of small old lady…RTJGA…

While RTJGA on my way to a main story line mission I noticed a cyclone of blackbirds flying directly above a “Hive”. (Building taken over by the infection and now pulses with big open sore looking things that shoot out infected guys.) Reminded my of Nightwatch/ Daywatch. Neat…..also stopped by the Javitz Center hmm accurate!

Due to the fact that apparently I didn’t quite get enough “Hive DNA” for this chick to research with in the LAST main mission I did…I have to now go get more…only this time I have to go into a “Hive”…As I am just starting to mentally comment to my self how its a little ridiculous that this “DNA” I am recovering just kind of pops out of the walls of the Hive in huge green glowing orbs that look just like the ones that pop out of everyone when I kill them…….CUT SCENE!…..could it be my first Boss Fight? IT IS!!!!!….ok first off I don’t really want to give away any spoilers or anything….but the Boss dude yells “reloading” to himself every time he reloads………….NEXT, just as I am getting my ass handed to me (don’t get me wrong I died like 5 times before finally wining) a bunch of non difficult baddies pop out for me to eat and the Boss runs away…..LAME…I’ll save the conclusion for you to get pissed about…I mean find out about…I am sure that the game goes on for much longer so we could all be surprised in the end?
*A secret…buy the whip arm power thing early on…its handy.*

Broke into a Military base and absorbed key people to get some fun upgrades including artillery strikes, and upgraded tank powers? Then did another mini-game where I had to jump from roof to roof hitting way points.

Look I think you get the point…there is tons to do….but its pretty much all the same. It may be just that I played the shit out of the Spiderman games (except Web of Shadows it sucked), but RTJGA is only cool for so long. It just feels like the creators of this game took a bunch of cool parts from other games…threw them together with a lame storyline…and said “Go to town!” I am just really torn. I think after playing the shit out of Red Faction: Guerrilla I am just left wanting more….playability wise I have to say that RF:G is just a better investment based on the fact that I am already bored with Prototype after 2 days of playing and going back to it. But hey…..like I said, I played a lot of Spiderman so I may just be jaded from all of that web-slinging action through New York. Go rent it and tell me what you think!
