I didn’t ever read much from the Ultimate Universe (Marvel). For some reason I seem to always find myself wrapped up in too many other small press books and such that I miss out on a lot of major events. Of course the other problem isĀ that by the time I hear that I should be reading a certain series I am already so far behind that I don’t have the money or time to play catch up. Well not this time I say! With the conclusions of Ultimatum, a big event in which many cities are destroyed as well as some of our most beloved capes, we find the Ultimate Universe in restart mode. and this time…I’m not going to miss out. So far there are only a total of 5 issues on the shelves right now for the new Ultimate Universe making for a perfect time to jump in.
Ultimate Spiderman was the first release and is only on issue two. Issue 1 sold out very quickly, but this week the re-print will be released on Wednesday! Ultimate Spidey is the Spidey I know and love, he is a teenager instead of an adult, making his snarky comments and snide remarks mildly more amusing due to the innate contextual circumstances. Believe it or not, while jugling all of his Dark Reign responsibilities, Brian M Bendis is finding time to write this excellent series as well. Spiderman is a good character for Bendis. If you follow him on twitter you will quickly see that he acts like a teenager most of the time, so writing dialogue like a teenager is probably second nature!
The Next book to come out was Ultimate Avengers which is being written by none other than Mr. Mark Millar himself. (If you read my Old Man Logan post you know that I have a soft spot for Millar) Also only on issue two, this week you will surely find copies of both issues due to the reprints that are slotted to hit shops Wednesday. Nick Fury modeled after Samuel L. Jackson is worth checking out, and of course Millar is a master of suspense and trickery in his comic books so expect some very interesting plot twists (Already!).
And the last book out now in the Ultimate series is Armor Wars issue #1 written by Warren Ellis. Tony Stark is one of the first to venture back into a destroyed Manhattan, along with Reed Richards (Mr. StupidPowers from the Fantastic Bore). Through a new acquaintance, Tony learns that his secret plans for his Iron Man suit have been stolen, as have other Stark Industries secrets. It would appear that the Armor Wars are going to involve some new characters for Tony to meet with. Warren Ellis was made (by Robo-Alien Women) to write Tony Stark. IronMan’s inflated ego and backhanded remarks make for the perfect Ellis character…After all, Warren too has an inflated ego and loves those snide remarks! I say that lovingly, of course.
