In this day in age, top 5 list are about as cliche as Ugg boots and leggings. However they are always a fun read. Reading these list help us to reflect on our own movie experiences and attempt to out do the list we are reading. It is in this spirit of engaging banter that I have decided to start writing some top 5 list for Battlemouth. Granted you may have seen many of these list before (I’m trying to come up with original ideas), but I still think we can all have fun with them. Read my list and put your thoughts in the comments, and we can engage in cinematic debates and discussions. Without further exposition, my first list. Top 5 evil movie corporations in film.
5. The Tyrell Corporation (Blade Runner)
Watch
In the world of Blade Runner, everything you see is dark and dirty. The weather is always bad, and the city seems to be in eternal night. The only light comes from the bombardment of advertisements and media around the urban setting. The biggest company in the middle of this grimy mecca is the Tyrell Corporation. They create Replicants, human like robots. The film centers on a group of these Replicants who return to the corporation looking for answers about their existence, and they don’t mind killing lots of us humans on their quest. In the film the head of the corporation suffers from a crippling god-syndrome. He isn’t worried about the murderous Replicants. All he cares about is creating the perfect Replicant, that is undetectable from normal humans. If you have seen the film a couple of times you know he succeed. Any corporation that wants to take control of the creation of life can’t help but be evil.
4. The Games Federation (The Running Man)
In a city that is ruled by the iron fist of the government, hard to believe it is actually a TV network that becomes the main vestige of evil. In The Running Man that is exactly what the government run Game Federation accomplishes. Headed by evil game show host Damon Killian, played by real life Family Fued host Richard Dawson. The top rated show on the network is The Running Man, a program that takes prisoners of the state and makes them fight for freedom. No one ever wins, and everyone dies. Simply thinking that I could get wrongly imprisoned by the government and forced to compete on a game show of death is a nightmare.
3. Soylent Green (Soylent Green)
Who hasn’t heard the cry, “Soylent Green is people. It’s People” Well if you have then you know why this corporation ranks amongst the top of the evil business ranks. In the film set in 2022, the world is on the brink of crisis. Through pollution, over population, and corruption New York City is unrecognizable. People can’t leave the city by law, and real food cost hundreds of dollars if you can find it. Enter Soylent Green, a giant food conglomerate that creates a food substitute pill. Due to the scarcity of food essentially the entire population of this hellish Earth survives by eating Soylent Green. By the end of the film, and the reveal of the companies secret ingredient the audience is rightfully appalled. Due to the current state of our world, this film hits too close to home.
2. Omni Consumer Products (RoboCop)
Like many real world companies the dastardly deeds perpetrate by Omni Consumer Products are done in the vein of good intentions. Mass producing products everyone needs, including the government. Through their powerful financial maneuvers they have essentially taken over the country from the government and the citizens. They constantly attempt to find new ways to destroy and buy anything that is outside of their corporate reach. The only thing that stands in their way is in fact one of their own creations (RoboCop). In my opinion this company is so evil due to the fact that they show how in an unchecked system these big businesses can take over the world, and we are helpless to stop them. Some would say this has already happened in our country today.
1. Silver Shamrock Novelties (Halloween 3: Season of the Witch)
If you wanted to kill all the children of America and wanted to do it on a holiday how would you do it. Well, the owner of Silver Shamrock Novelties has a suggestion. Why not create evil mask that will kill the wearers when they put them on for Halloween. Brilliant! The mask contain a chip and fragments of Stonehenge (magically evil). The chips are set to trigger when the wearer sees the companies TV commercial on Halloween night. When this happens, the people’s head melt. I know this film takes alot of heat due to the lack of Mikey Myers, but come on. This has to be one of the wildest plots in all of cinema. As far as this list, any corporation whose sole purpose is the mass genocide of children must sit atop the evil corporate ladder.
